We’re hiring Experience Designers

The Business Innovation Factory (BIF) is currently seeking several Experience Designers for our Providence, Rhode Island office. This role requires a unique blend of research chops and real-world experience at the intersection of human-centered design and social innovation. • contributing to and/or leading ethnographic fieldwork efforts (start to finish) which generate powerful observations and insights
  • helping synthesize data and translating observations and insights into transformational ideas for new solutions and approaches
  • helping craft an articulate and compelling story that helps people connect with the work

Our ideal candidate(s):

  • draws on knowledge and experience from a background in design or social sciences
  • combines fluency in qualitative research methods and data analysis  with an ability to move beyond research as outcome to research as input to real-world solutions
  • is interested in exploring new and novel approaches to research and their application in BIF’s lab work
  • has experience with or is open to working within the human-centered design process
  • has an entrepreneurial mindset and is comfortable working with ambiguous problems in a dynamic environment

  • is willing to travel

If this sounds like you, please send a resume, cover letter and examples or cases that demonstrate the variety of research projects you have worked on. In the examples, please share details about your research approach, what observations and insights were generated, and the outcomes of the study.

BIF is Looking for an Experience Design Team Leader

The Business Innovation Factory’s (BIF) mission is to help institutional leaders design, test, and commercialize next practices and new business models in the real world. Our vision is to influence systems-level transformation in areas of high social importance focusing on healthcare, education, and public services. We believe that human-centered design, rapid prototyping, and storytelling/engagement are at the heart of any successful transformation process.

An increasing number of institutional leaders know that disruption is everywhere, business models don’t last as long as they used to, and current innovation efforts are at best producing tweaks. If transformation is the goal, leaders know they need a new innovation approach. BIF helps make transformation safer and easier to manage by helping leaders design, test, and commercialize next practices and new business models.

A key component of BIF’s business model is its eclectic, optimistic, and fun Experience Design Team, who are now nine strong. BIF’s Experience Designers work with our Experience Labs to deliver our strategy, design, and capacity services in the healthcare, education, and public services market. As their career’s progress, Experience Designers assume project and client management roles and work to support business development, as well as on developing BIF’s next design practices and tools. Here is our new BIF Experience Design Competency Model.

What are we looking for?

In order to scale our Experience Design Team to meet our growth objectives and market demand, we are seeking a BIF Experience Design Team Leader to join the BIF Leadership Team.  We are looking for a player-coach, someone who leads by example in the market. Our Experience Design Team Leader will be capable of leading any of our most complex projects and important client relationships, as well as being a role model helping to recruit, engage, develop, and retain our experience design talent. In addition to market-facing roles, our Experience Design Team Leader will also assume the key internal roles of coach, mentor, and talent development in collaboration with BIF’s Talent Manager, Stephanie Lanoue.

BIF’s Experience Design Team Leader will work actively in the market in project, client, and business development leadership roles (70%) where most of our mentoring and talent development happens. This BIF leadership role also includes point responsibility for our Experience Designer Talent Management capability (30%).

BIF’s Experience Design Team Leader will:

  • Be ready to assume project, client delivery, and development leadership roles in the market to deliver our next practices and new business model strategy, design, and capacity services
  • Work across and with all three of our BIF Experience Labs targeting education, healthcare, and public services
  • Be capable of leading any of BIF’s most important clients, complex projects, and teams
  • Serve as a role model both externally and internally to attract, mentor, coach, and retain experience design talent
  • Help our design talent get better faster at developing creative project outputs and transformative solutions
  • Strengthen and grow BIF’s Experience Design Team
  • Serve as an active participant on BIF’s Leadership Team

BIF’s Experience Team Leader should have the following skills, qualities, and experience:

  • 10+ years experience in institutional innovation, human-centered design and business/organization strategy, design and capacity service delivery
  • 5+ years experience leading client engagement and delivery teams and coaching, mentoring and developing experience design talent
  • Outstanding interpersonal, leadership, verbal and written communication skills
  • Socially conscious, but knows that without a business model, innovation doesn’t scale
  • Strong collaborator, recognizing that 21st-century leadership is more about being a catalyst than a manager

This is a full-time position in Providence, R.I. Salary range starting at $90,000 commensurate with skill and experience.  If this sounds like you, please send a resume, cover letter, and writing/project samples.  All materials should be sent to stephanie@bif.is.
