Wearing jeans, a suit coat, …he likes things equally dramatic.
His breakthrough in thinking was to see into the body and not be fixed on the surface of the body. To get there he started learning programming languages to create 3-D spaces in the body, to see more into the body.
His work began when Alexander worked for NASA while at Yale to help create visual tools for astronauts to perform surgery in space. It’s funny actually, relating to six degrees of innovation, I also worked at NASA and worked on creating teleoperated robotic tools to perform surgery in space. We never met, but worked on trying to solve the same problems. A small world from two avenues on the same NASA street.
Back to Alexander: his work with NASA spurred his drive to start his own company to create visual tools for medicine, not just for space applications, but for all humanity. To learn more about where he is on his journey on creating 3-dimensional rich visual experiences go to thevisualMD, the Google earth for the human body.
This tool enables users to interact with the visual data. By clicking through visuals users can see the transition of the stages of disease, medicine, and more. It looks very promising. A visual datalog of data. Let’s hope that in the future this visual data will also be tied to the greater world around us, just as Google Earth is becoming more than a dynamic surface level map.
His work has been featured on numerous television programs and in Life, Time, the New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian, and JAMA.
TAKE AWAY
Innovation is about learning, becoming an expert, and driving towards a goal. Making a difference is about taking a stand, in this case, 3-dimensional tools for medical knowledge, learning, and interactive tools. By understanding a desired goal, and adding tools to the tool kit, one can reach the goal. In this case, twenty years of discipline and focus has enabled Alexander to reach his goal.
