Cancer Survivor, Cancer Researcher,
Elana Simon is an incoming Harvard freshman who will be majoring in computer science. She is the survivor of a rare pediatric liver cancer called fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma, as well as the co-first author of a paper published in Science magazine, which reported her discovery of the unique genetic chimera, or mutation, that causes that same cancer. An aerial acrobat, dancer, and actress, she won the inaugural Young Champion in Cancer Research prize from the American Association of Cancer Research and was a keynote speaker at the 2014 Sohn Foundation investors conference at Lincoln Center. This spring, she demonstrated her research to President Obama at the 2014 White House Science Fair.
